Should you choose the in-dash GPS system?

Most care manufacturers in the US offer a sweet electronics package that includes an in-dash GPS system as an option.  If you’ve ever wondered if there are any “gotchas” in buying these systems, here’s one: map upgrades.  Let’s take a quick look at the costs to upgrade these systems.

The stand alone GPS device market peaked a few years back.  Now, GPS units from companies like Garmin and TomTom have receded in prices and picking up a decent one will run just a little more than $100.  There are plenty of bargains to be had as they face stiff competition from smartphones like Android based phones that offer free, voice-guided GPS.

So where’s the catch?  If you can swallow the upfront costs (or push them off on a loan) of your in-dash GPS system, there’s map updates to consider.  Most in-dash GPS systems have maps loaded in memory from which they spout directions.  As the times change with construction, improvements and the like, so must the data in your GPS system.

Car manufacturer Honda sent out this message in hopes to get customers of its in-dash GPS system to buy the upgraded maps:

Without a map update, you may not find new destinations, addresses or points of interest. With a map update, you can save on fuel costs with the optimal route to your destination, and minimize wear and tear and mileage on your vehicle. You’ll also reduce the environmental impact of your ride.

All true.  The map update costs $185 but customers can save 20% buy purchasing before June 30th.  Honda’s update works by putting the update on a DVD which is inserted into the system.

Conversely, updating maps on stand alone GPS systems is far less costly.  Garmin offers Lifetime updates for $89.99 for most of it’s recent stand alone units.  TomTom offers 4 updates per year for the lifetime of the product for $99.  These prices seem a bit more reasonable than Honda.

Alarm Dock turns wood and iPhone into alarm clock with style

Areaware iPhone alarm dock turns iPhone into classy alarmclock

Simplicity itself is how one might describe the Alarm Dock.  Carved from wood, the Alarm Dock provides a simple dock for your iPhone that turns it into a common looking alarm clock.  For just $39, it goes into my “not bad” column.

The wood is cut to hold your iPhone while providing a pass through for your power cord.  No speaker, no confusing dials, no confusing am/pm button.  Simple.

Combined with a flip clock app, overnight guests may have a hard time believing that’s your phone sitting there.  Others may just shake their heads at your fancy spending habits of paying $39 for an iPhone holder.

The unit is scheduled to ship 9/15/11 and is available for pre-order now.

Refurbished Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets will be $199 with AT&T on May 27th It seems that AT&T ran a special last evening on refurbished Galaxy Tab tablets. The offer was simply, make a purchase and get it for $199.99. Well, as it turns out that was a pretty popular sale because they sold out of the inventory shortly after they made the announcement on their @ATTDeals Twitter page. But in a nice little tease for anyone that may have missed out, they have promised to come back with another $199 (refurbished) Galaxy Tab special later this month. According to the posting;

“A new social offer will start on 5/27!”

Samsung Galaxy S II Confirmed for AT&T, Verizon & Sprint as Samsung Attain, Function & Within?

As we’ve told you time and time again Samsung is without a doubt one of the most successful manufacturers of Android powered smartphones. However, while the Galaxy S has given the company a ton of success it’s not really on par with high powered smartphones like the Motorola Atrix which features a 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and a gigabyte of RAM while the Galaxy S features a 1GHz single-core processor and 512MB of RAM.

Luckily, Samsung is looking to considerably beef up their Galaxy S line with the forthcoming Galaxy S II. For starters, this device features a 4.27-inch display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and more (full spec list can be seen here). It also runs Google’s latest Android ‘Gingerbread’ 2.3 while most Galaxy S iterations are still humming along with the somewhat dated Android ‘Froyo’ 2.2. Unfortunately, while we can tell you just about everything there is to know regarding the Galaxy S II’s hardware we still don’t know for sure what US carriers will be picking up the device.

Seeing how the Galaxy S appeared in one form or another on just about every major wireless carrier in the United States including T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint and AT&T, many have speculated that the Galaxy S II will do the same. Well, while we unfortunately not confirm or deny that it will be coming to all of the above mentioned wireless carriers we do have a decent lead that says it will at least be coming to AT& T, Verizon and Sprint. Word comes from an online retailer by the name of Wireless Xcessories Group who has just posted a listing for a Galaxy S II case.

Assuming for the time being that this information is correct it also means that we will be seeing the Galaxy S II hit AT&T as the Samsung Attain, Verizon as the Samsung Function and Sprint as the Samsung Within. Of course, until Samsung or any of these wireless carriers come forth to officially confirm or deny this you’re going to want to take it with a grain of salt.

Regardless of which wireless carrier does end up getting the Galaxy S II, will you be getting one?

Samsung Galaxy S II Gets Minor Update

Many different hardware manufacturers have released their Android powered offerings in an attempt to grab their respective share of the market but only few have succeeded. One of the most highly successful Android powered smartphone manufacturers is Samsung. Much of their success can be attributed to the Galaxy S which has appeared wireless carriers far and wide in one form or another. However, they are looking to do things all over again with the Samsung Galaxy S II which features things like a 4.27-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 8 megapixel rear facing camera with 1080p video capture, 2 megapixel front facing camera and Google’s Android ‘Gingerbread’ 2.3.

As you can see this phone is quite the behemoth but many are wondering if it will be plagued with the same prolonged update schedule that surrounds the Galaxy S. Well, while it’s not a major release of Android or anything, you may be happy to hear that Samsung has already pushed out a minor update for the Galaxy S II. Included in this update is a bug fix for the phone’s auto-brightness setting which has been giving some users problems. Additionally, they have also updated the speed at which the Swype text input software responds which is sure to come as a pleasant surprise for those looking to break the world texting record.

The NUU MiniKey Bluetooth keyboard iPhone 4 case

It seems like we cover a lot of Bluetooth keyboards that are specifically designed for mobile devices such as the iPhone before, like the EFO Mini Bluetooth keyboard, Freedom i-Connex, and the Chinavasion one. Joining the party is the NUU MiniKey Bluetooth keyboard case for the iPhone 4.

Of course, there is the matter of the battery life, as Bluetooth tends to drain the battery. However, this can also be a secondary battery for the iPhone should there be a need to make a quick phone call with a low iPhone battery.

Another thing that might a seller is the fact that it has backlit keys. There are also “text-editing shortcuts, a long battery life, and an automatic sleep mode”.

For those who like the tactile feedback on the iPhone, this is your thing. Yeah, eat that, BlackBerry! I don’t seem to have a price on the NUU Minikey Bluetooth keyboard, but it should arrive in many countries soon.

Samsung DROID Charge Now Available from Verizon

4G phones are hitting the market and getting announced left and right. Already Sprint has had the game on lock with devices like the HTC EVO 4G leaving Verizon Wireless to catch up. Big Red answered right back with the highly popular HTC Thunderbolt but aren’t looking to cut things short there. In fact, it was just announced today that the Samsung DROID Charge is now available for purchase through the wireless carrier.

Priced at $299.99 with a 2-year contract the Samsung DROID Charge features a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen, 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 8 megapixel rear facing camera with autofocus and 720p video capture, 2GB of internal storage with pre-installed 32GB microSD card and, of course, 4G LTE connectivity.

While the device itself looks quite nice I see many consumers having a problem with the $299.99 price tag especially since other high end smartphones are making their debut closer to $199.99.
