Morpho DJ system puts the iPhone on a turntable

We have covered a lot of interesting Apps that help DJs, like the Tap DJ App and the PocketLoops. Now there is this Nicholas J. Bryan’s Morpho DJ.

You can watch the video here, and it is pretty amazing to see an iPhone put on a turntable and then scratched and used as if it was a vinyl LP record. It works by affixing the smartphone to a perspex disc and the accelerometer and gyroscope data does the rest.

You will note how it can go backwards, speed up, and all sorts of interesting things. Apparently, they plan to put it on display at NIME (New Interfaces for Musical Expression) conference.

It reminds me of how DJ Rana Sobhany uses two iPads to do the DJ thing. In other words, someone has figured out a way to make the DJ thing compatible with our culture of iDevices. I suppose that this is the future, isn’t it?
